Following the immense destruction of the March 2011 earthquake in Natori City, a charitable German foundation – the Reinhard and Sonja Ernst Foundation – provided funding for a public facility intended for communal interaction and support.
With the provision of a multi-purpose room, tatami room, meeting area and play room, the single-storied wood structure situated on the south garden of the Natori Performing Arts Center is designed to accommodate local residents of all ages.
Formally, two intersecting roofs create nested interiors, hosting a variety of scales throughout the building.
Over time, the building aspires to become a popular gathering space that represents the resilience of the people of the region.
