This large-scale redevelopment of the Taipei Main Station area is known as the “never ending construction site,” and centers on a terminal for the high-speed railway between Taipei and Tao-Yuan international airport. The team of Fumihiko Maki (CECI + Maki and Associates + JJPP) was awarded 1st prize in the July 2005 competition. For the 47 hectares site, the design proposal includes (in addition to the underground station) a high-rise complex of retail, office and hotel, as well as a landscape design that respects and highlights nearby historical buildings. The station atrium extends for 5 stories down to the platform level, and is crowned by two towers, which will rise 320 meters (Tower C1) and 240 meters (tower D1) respectively. Each tower has a conceptual head and body, angled 15 degrees apart to align with Taipei’s two historical city grids. These two axes are further reflected in the “linear forest” landscape surrounding the base of the towers.
