Chiba University Inohana Memorial Hall RenovationCompletion Date:2014
Chiba University Inohana Memorial Hall (1963) was Fumihiko Maki's second project in Japan, following Toyoda Memorial Hall at Nagoya University (1960). It is characterized by its unique trapezoidal silhouette, a highly memorable and symbolic form oriented towards the main campus square. After fifty years, and out of concern for its structural integrity following the Great Eastern Japan Earthquake in 2011, the University embarked on its full renovation. Exterior work included the reinforcement of the main structure, repair of cedar board-formed concrete walls, and partial reinstallation of glass curtain wall. Interior work included asbestos remediation, new ceiling finishes, and refinishing the existing wooden stage flooring. To better accommodate lectures and ceremonies, larger seats with integrated desks were installed (reducing seating from 720 to 526), while soundproofing, sound equipment, and general acoustics were improved. Additional mechanical upgrades include a new occupied-zone HVAC system and LED lighting fixtures, with complete illumination and dimming control.
