Mihara Performing Arts CenterCompletion Date:2007
The Mihara Performing Arts Center is situated in Mihara city, 70 kilometers east of Hiroshima. The project, sited in the city’s central park, replaces an aging existing cultural center with a new 1200-seat multi-purpose hall, rehearsal and practice rooms, supported by a variety of public spaces. A pair of courtyards animate the building’s modestly scaled foyer, café, and public lobbies, bringing surrounding greenery into the building and filling the public spaces with light and fresh air. On the exterior, the main hall’s gently curving roof form, clad in iridescent stainless steel, creates a memorable building image while maintaining the project’s modest scale and pavilion-like quality.
