Toyoda Memorial Hall RenovationCompletion Date:2007

Toyoda Memorial Hall is Fumihiko Maki’s first project in Japan and an early selection of DOCOMOMO Japan’s projects worthy of recognition and preservation. In response, the University undertook a comprehensive restoration of the original structure, including an ingenious seismic upgrade - maintaining the original steel reinforcing and basic structural elements, but adding thickness to the concrete for added strength - that also gave the exposed concrete a fully revitalized appearance. On the interior, the main auditorium was upgraded to enhance acoustics for musical performances and lectures, and a new multi-purpose foyer / atrium space was added to properly service University functions and events.
