Tokyo Church of ChristCompletion Date:1995
The Tokyo Church of Christ is a thriving Christian congregation in central Tokyo. Located along a busy throughfare, their new home is focused on the second-level main chapel space, its vaulted ceiling creating a symbolic skyline in the chaotic urban context. The Church’s daily-use programs (office, day care, meeting) are located below, close to the main entry. On the exterior, the chapel’s west-facing glass skin - a combination of exterior translucent glass and an inner layer sandwich of glass and glass-fiber tissue - is reminiscent of a traditional Japanese shoji screen. Its double-layered assembly fills the interior space of the main chapel with a warm and silent light, effectively shutting out city noise to create a sheltered, tranquil, meditative, and sacred space.
