Tokyo Metropolitan GymnasiumCompletion Date:1990

Tokyo Metropolitan Gymnasium is a large-scale multi-purpose athletic complex sited in the outer gardens of the Meiji Shrine area. Befitting its park-like surroundings, the design incorporates a variety of exterior spaces and a diversity of architectural expressions. Each of the interconnected facilities (main arena, sub-arena, and indoor pool) maintains its integrity as an independent building volume, together defining a series of connected, human-scaled exterior public spaces – an expression of 'collective form.' As one's viewpoint shifts while walking through the project, the overlapping of different volumes creates unexpected silhouettes and new horizons, rendering each visit a new experience.
